In 2008, the National Bank of Poland introduced into circulation a coin commemorating the Polish poet Zbigniew Herbert.

Zbigniew Herbert was born on October 29, 1924 in Lviv, died on July 28, 1998 in Warsaw. He studied economics, law and philosophy. His father, Bolesław, was a pre-war banker.

Zbigniew Herbert accidentally worked in the Gdańsk branch of the National Bank of Poland in 1948. He quit his job when he enrolled at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.
