Warsaw's Pawiak prison was built in 1835. During the Russian Empire, it housed Polish conspirators and insurgents, among others. In the interwar period, it was one of many Polish prisons. During the German occupation from 1939 to 1944, Pawiak became the largest German political prison in occupied Poland, where over 37,000 people perished.
