Perth Mint: Lunar III - Year of the Dragon 1 oz Silver 2024 Proof Opal is a collector's proposal from the Australian mint, The Perth Mint, for the year 2024.

Previous coins in the series included the Year of the Mouse 2020, Year of the Ox 2021, Year of the Tiger 2022, and Year of the Rabbit 2023. The Lunar series refers to the 12 animals representing the Chinese lunar calendar.

The year 2024 belongs to the dragon, which in Chinese mythology is a majestic beast inhabiting rivers, lakes, oceans, and wandering the skies. The Chinese zodiac sign of the dragon occurs in the years: 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, and 2024.

The silver coin featuring the image of the dragon has been struck in .9999 fine silver, in proof standard. The coin's appeal includes elements of opal.

An important aspect is the limited mintage of the coin, numbering only 6,000 pieces.

Each coin comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity and original packaging.

The obverse of the Year of the Dragon coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. Surrounding the portrait are inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "AUSTRALIA", and information about the coin's face value.

The reverse side depicts a Chinese dragon made of opal. The reverse also features the Chinese character for "dragon", the inscription "YEAR OF THE DRAGON", the letter "P" representing The Perth Mint, and information about the metal purity, weight, and year of issue of the coin.
