Polish Thermopylae - Głogów 20 PLN Silver 2024 Proof is an interesting numismatic offering presented by the National Bank of Poland. The coin refers to the defense of Głogów in 1109, which is regarded as one of the most significant moments in Polish history and is often compared to the Battle of Thermopylae. During this event, the forces of Bolesław III the Wrymouth defended the city against the attack of the German Emperor Henry V.
This piece is made of silver with a fineness of Ag.925, weighs 28.28 grams, and is in proof standard.
Additionally, the silver coin comes with a strictly limited mintage of up to 10,000 pieces, and it is delivered in an exclusive case along with a certificate of authenticity.
The obverse features the goddess Athena, designed by Urszula Walerzak. The obverse bears the inscription "RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA 2024" (Republic of Poland 2024), "POLSKIE TERMOPILE" (Polish Thermopylae), as well as the coin’s nominal value and the year of minting.
The reverse depicts a medieval knight holding a bow and arrow, with a stylized scene of the Siege of Głogów behind him, showing part of the defensive fortifications and a siege tower. The reverse includes the inscription "GŁOGÓW". The reverse design was created by Kajetan Karkuciński.
