Karol Wojtyła lived in the palace for some time. He settled here in 1964, a year after his election as bishop, and moved out when he was elected pope (1978). When visiting Krakow, during all his pilgrimages to Poland, he chose the palace as a place of rest.

He became famous for his spontaneous, unofficial speeches to crowds of believers gathered at ul. Franciszkańska, on the square in front of the Franciscan Church and its vicinity.

In the courtyard of the palace there is a statue of John Paul II funded and made by Jole Sensi Croci. On the initiative of the Pope, he was transferred to Krakow during his first pilgrimage to Poland in 1979. It was unveiled on May 18, 1980 to commemorate the Pope's 60th birthday jubilee.

REVERSE: Fragment of the portal of the main entrance to the Bishop's Palace in Krakow, above it the "papal window" with a mosaic depicting the portrait of Pope John Paul II. On the left side of the window, a stylized papal coat of arms, along the edge, from the bottom upwards, an inscription: PALACE OF BISHOPS IN KRAKOW.

OBVERSION: The central facade of the Bishop's Palace in Krakow, against its background, on the left-hand side, a "papal window" with a mosaic depicting a portrait of Pope John Paul II. On the right-hand side, above the building, an image of the eagle established as the state emblem of the Republic of Poland, under the eagle, on the right-hand side, the mint mark: m / w. Pope John Paul II.
