Coin issued by the National Bank of Poland to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the March Constitution.

The regaining of independence by Poland after 123 years made it necessary to define the political system of the reborn state. For this purpose, on February 10, 1919, the Legislative Sejm met. The final shape of the Constitution was a resultant of the project of the Constitutional Committee and the postulates put forward in the course of a long parliamentary debate. The main points of contention concerned the method of electing the Head of State and the number of chambers in the future parliament. The Left was in favour of a unicameral Sejm and election of the President by the general public, while the Right demanded a bicameral parliament which would elect the Head of State. Eventually, the second version won.

The Constitution was passed on 17th March 1921. According to the passed constitution, Poland was a republic with majority of legislative power over the executive power. As it soon turned out, this solution caused a lot of problems. In a very divided Sejm, it was difficult to form a lasting parliamentary majority. The first Sejm elected according to the new rules met on November 28, 1922.
