INSURED SHIPMENT / OWN COLLECTION

Another heroic battle belonging to the "Polish Thermopylae" series.

The Battle of Węgrów took place on 3 February 1863 during the January Uprising. The Poles captured the Hungarians at night from 22nd to 23rd January 1863. Under the command of Władysław Jabłonowski and Jan Matliński they defeated the Russian army. Near the town they established a camp gathering 3500 insurgents. However, the Russians did not give up and decided to take the Hungarians back. Soldiers were sent along with cannons. The town was surrounded and was an easy target. Four hundred Polish peasants set off in the direction of cannons under the personal command of Wladyslaw Jablonowski, capturing them after the first shot. Over 300 tsarist soldiers and about 100 Polish kosyniers fell in direct combat. The Russian army, waiting for reinforcements, withdrew from Wegrowo. At that time, the insurgents efficiently led the army and carts with the insurgent property out of the city. Polish units withdrew safely to Siemiatycze.

The coin's reverse shows a fragment of the lithography of the Battle of Węgrów. On the obverse of all coins in this series there is Athena, goddess of just war and wisdom.
