The first coin in the new "Dragons of the World" series. Throughout history, the mythology and symbolism associated with the dragon has fascinated cultures around the world. This coin was struck in an interesting shape and depicts a Welsh red dragon.

Historically, the dragon was often used to represent the Celts in battles against the invading Saxons and by the British, in battles against the Romans. For this reason, it is likely that the Welsh originally chose the dragon as their emblem to strike fear into the hearts of their enemies.

The earliest recorded use of the dragon as a symbol of Wales is in the Historia Brittonum, written around 829, but it is widely believed to have been the battle banner of King Arthur. During the reign of the monarchs of the Tudor dynasty (who themselves came from Wales) the red dragon was used in the coat of arms of the English Crown. The red dragon is often seen as a symbol of all things Welsh.
