The Gdańsk Mint formerly and today

Mint of Gdańsk is a private, dynamically growing company that sells and distributes coins and numismatic accessories around the world. The name we adopted a few years ago is not accidental but consciously refers to the history of the Mint of Gdansk, which existed already eight centuries ago.

The beginning of the Gdańsk coinage dates back to the 13th century. Coins on a larger scale were then minted by the Teutonic Order, who, during the reign of Konrad von Jungingen, minted gold ducats and silver bracelets. The last religious coin was issued in 1449, but unfortunately not a single copy has survived to our times.

When the Gdańsk Mint returned to Poland again, in the next 300 years, the image of subsequent Polish kings appeared on the coins. Bits, among others, silver pennies and half-grosz, silver półtorak, silver twins, silver threefolds, silver fours, silver sixes and gold red.

The Gdansk coat of arms began appearing in the 16th century. It was minted on silver bolts, while gold ducats adorned the image of the king in the Renaissance armor.

During the reign of Zygmunt August, the Mint of Gdansk has been minting silver denarii with the coat of arms of Gdańsk and the eagle of Royal Prussia.

King Zygmunt August did not leave any descendants, and immediately after his death there was chaos and electoral wars began. The independent city of Gdańsk did not recognize any of the successive rulers. The image of the kings was replaced by the sign used for the old Prussian coins, and the coins were called "siege".

After the death of Zygmunt August, the issue of coins was forbidden in the territory of the Crown and Prussia, which Gdańsk did not comply with. The Mint of Gdansk brushed silver pennies and triples, and later, thanks to the settlement with Stefan Batory, coins were again minted under the royal stamp.

In subsequent years, the Gdańsk Mint went through a boom. The best medalists in the Commonwealth came to Gdańsk. The quality and precision of their stamps can be admired on the Gdansk golden ducats, where not only the image of the king, but also the style of the era changed. Unfortunately, the most valuable specimens were stolen and taken away from Polish lands during World War II.
