INSURED SHIPMENT / OWN COLLECTION

Coin opening the new series "Grand Shipwrecks in a History".

Whydah Gally was a fully armed galley ship, which was originally used to transport goods and slaves. In 1717 it was captured by pirate Captain Samuel "Black Sam" Bellamy. He robbed more ships on it, until finally a storm took him to the bottom.

For over 260 years, no one knew where the ship was. It was discovered in 1984 off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, buried under the sand. This ship is the first pirate wreck to be found years later.

The reverse of the coin shows a colorful image of the ship. Engraved pirate ornaments underline the unusual character of the coin.
