It is a challenge even for the most experienced mountaineers, and more than 500 climbers have lost their lives on this mountain. With a height of 4478 meters (14,692 feet), it is one of the highest peaks in the Alps and Europe. It was not conquered until 1865, when a group led by Edward Whymper reached the summit.
