The Bible of Kings is a real pearl among the jewel books of the Manuscript House of Emissions. Stylized for books from the time of Bolesław Chrobry, which served the manifestation of power and power of the monarch. The Kings' Bible issued on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of regaining Poland's Independence is also a truly patriotic book, referring to the glory days of Poland. Unusual in every respect.
Before, in the middle of the fifteenth century, Gutenberg invented printing, books were written by hand. In the Middle Ages, patient scribes typed them manually. They were all manuscripts from Latin. manus - hand, scribere - write, or manuscripts. The work of the scribes was arduous, difficult, but its effects still impress. The books were then of great value, not only because of the limited availability of materials and decorations, but because of the few people who had such skills.
Most of the scribes were clergymen who wrote and rewritten various works in monastic scriptwriters. Religious books were the most popular. They were needed to celebrate the liturgy, to calculate movable holidays, to write down the lives of saints, in a word - to the functioning of the Church. No wonder that the Bible was most often transcribed at that time - the most important book. Rarely, however, the whole of the scripture was placed in one book - because of the volume of the Bible, it was limited to individual parts. The Gospels, that is, the books containing the text of all four Gospels, were very popular. Because in the Middle Ages, the end of the world was looked for, the Apocalypse of St. John the Evangelist.
The books in the Middle Ages also served the rulers as a manifestation of power and power. As the richest, they ordered extremely expensive and richly decorated manuscripts, designed to be a symbol of their status. Most often, these were the Bible books, especially the Gospels. Quite often, their pages contained rich illustrations that allegorically expressed grudges against power over various peoples, crowns or praised the merits of the founder of the manuscript. The biblical stories written on their pages were symbolically connected with the person of the ruler whose authority came from God.
Our Bible of Kings, stylized for the times of Bolesław Chrobry, for these reasons is a book different from all published so far in Poland. It contains the text of the four Gospels and the Apocalypse and is issued in accordance with the rules according to which medieval manuscripts were created, the Kings' Bible retains contemporary decorations, typefaces and illustrations, as well as a rich cover patterned on the most magnificent frames of medieval manuscripts.
Creating The Bible of Kings we used the medieval "Carolingian" font, painted rich miniatures, and added illumination inspired by the Gospel of Otto III, who in 1000 in Gniezno founded his golden diadem Bolesław Chrobrem as a proof of friendship and recognition. This extraordinary art-book consists of over 150 cards imitating the look and texture of parchment.
In his chronicle, Gall Anonim described the relationship of rulers in this way"
Boleslaw received him as honestly and splendidly as it was to receive the king, the Roman emperor and the distinguished guest. For the emperor's arrival he prepared wondrous miracles; first, troops, all sorts of knights, then dignitaries set apart like choirs, on a large plain, and individual, standing standing detachments distinguished a different color of costumes. And it was not cheap variegation, just any ornaments, but the most expensive things that can be found anywhere in the world [...]. Considering his glory, power, and wealth, the Roman emperor cried out in admiration: "For the crown of my empire, what I see is greater than the proclamation of [...]. And removing his imperial tiara from his head, he put it on Bolesław's head as he crossed the path and friendship [...] and for a triumphal banner he gave him a nail from the cross of the Lord together with the spear of St. Maurycy , in exchange for which Bolesław offered him the arm of St. Adalbert. And on such a great day they joined in friendship, that the emperor appointed him a brother and collaborator of the empire and called him a friend and an ally of the Roman people. "
The Bible of Kings begins with a series of elaborate miniatures depicting the canons of Eusebius. In the Middle Ages there was no division of the Holy Scriptures into chapters and verses. Instead, the Gospel text was divided into numbered segments - pericopes. Eusebius' canons is a compilation of pericopes from various Gospels in corresponding columns. Thanks to this, it is easy to find similar fragments or descriptions of the same events with different Evangelists. This is the first Holy Bible to be decoded in Poland.
