The kookaburra is a bird of the kingfisher family, especially known for its powerful call, which resembles laughter. It inhabits mainly Australia and New Guinea, although some populations have been introduced to other regions. It prefers open forests, wooded areas, savannas, areas near waterways and even parks and gardens.

It often remains perched on branches, carefully watching the ground before swooping down on its prey. Its diet includes insects, small reptiles, rodents, amphibians and other small animals. It is a territorial bird, and its characteristic vocalisations play an important role in communication between members of the group. Many kookaburras live in family groups and cooperate in defending their territory and raising their young.
