Cyclopes are giants in Greek mythology with one eye in the middle of their foreheads, engaged in herding and building huge walls. They also worked for Hephaestus in the forge and spun lightning bolts for Zeus.
The Cyclops figure may have been inspired by children born with Patau syndrome, a defect in which the eye sockets happen to fuse into one.
