Great Commanders - why is this series worthwhile?

Military themes have been present on collector coins for many years. What is interesting, they arouse great interest all the time. It is no different with the "Great Commanders" series, each coin of which has increased its value.

Military themes

Military themes are common in our world. They appear in films, TV series, books, music. They have fascinated people for years. We eagerly read about the conquests of great commanders, especially from ancient times. We learn strategy and logical thinking from them. That is why it is a subject eagerly put on coins, which additionally gain in value. In addition, numismatists are particularly interested in Asian history. Asians often outstripped the rest of the world in terms of discoveries and achievements, also in military matters. Legends about their invincible warriors continue to interest people to this day. An example of this is the Zhao Yun coin, which was released in 2019 at a price of 1,500 zloty. Currently, its value is estimated at 3500 zlotys! A similar situation happened to the Guan Yu coin from the "Chinese Heroes" series. On the day of issue, its price was PLN 1100, and now it can be purchased on the secondary market for PLN 1700. The combination of martial art and the Far East themes is a recipe for an excellent investment

"Great Commanders" series

The "Great Commanders" series combines all the above-mentioned features. It is related to the theme of war, and represents, as the name suggests, the best and most effective leaders whose achievements impress contemporary military men. The first two coins were dedicated to warriors from ancient Greece. Spartacus, the first coin of the series, cost PLN 900 on the day of issue. After 3 years its value increased to 1600 zlotys! The second coin in the series, Leonidas, was released in 2019 at an issue price of PLN 900. At this point, its value is estimated at 1400 PLN.

Last month a third coin was released, this time depicting one of the most famous leaders from the Far East, namely Genghis Khan. This coin bodes exceptionally well for success. Its value has already increased, and it has only been a few weeks since its release! Almost all coins that depict heroes of the Far East are a guaranteed investment success. Much depends on the idea for the reverse and obverse of the coin, as well as the execution. The Genghis Khan coin has been exceptionally well received in the collector community. As Mik Woodgate of AgAuNews.com says, "Straight up, the coin is gorgeous. In a single scene it manages to capture the brutality and chaos of the Mongol charge, while still keeping focus on the central figure – Genghis Khan. It’s another one of those designs that is packed in all over the coin face, exhibiting a fine sense of depth and fine detail. The antique finish is very nicely done, and the red gilding, although a little bright, certainly enhances the sense of brutality on show. The obverse has always been a highlight of this series. So many coins in this genre have just a patterned border on them, but the campaign map is an inspired idea that ties in perfectly with the main theme."

5$ Genghis Khan

This five-dollar coin shows the fighting Genghis Khan on the reverse. Many brave Mongols can be seen in the background. Of particular note is the selective red gold plating, which imitates the blood of the warriors. The coin is also decorated with a three-millimetre high relief, which shows every detail of the design.

The obverse is decorated with a map depicting the deployment of the Mongol armies and their expansion; the most important battles and battle routes are marked on it. The coin comes in an elegant wooden box with a certificate of authenticity.

Genghis Khan was the famous founder of the Mongol Empire, one of the greatest conquerors in history. He was born between 1155 and 1167 in the nomadic settlement of Deliün Bołdak (today's Russia). He was the son of a local Mongol chieftain, Jesügej. He was characterised by extraordinary charisma. He gained power over some Mongolian tribes, whose chiefs proclaimed him Khan. Thanks to this, he subjugated the Tatars, the Kereites, the Najmanis, etc.  In 1206 he was proclaimed the Great Khan, or Genghis Khan.

He led a vast expansion not only into Asia, but also into Europe. Crossing the Gobi desert, he began to conquer the lands of China. Genghis Khan's armed forces consisted mainly of horsemen. The Mongols of the time were known for exploiting the technical advances of their opponents. Genghis Khan was a cruel and fearsome leader, which made his army extremely disciplined.

Genghis considered the state to be the property of his family - hence before his death he divided it 1224 between his sons and relatives, retaining supreme authority over the whole.
