“When Will You Marry?” is one of Paul Gauguin’s most recognizable works, painted in 1892 during his first stay in Tahiti. The artist juxtaposed two female figures with contrasting poses and expressions, creating a subtle sense of tension and an air of mystery. Intense yellows, reds, greens and blues, arranged in the flat areas of colour so characteristic of Gauguin’s style, give the composition its striking decorative quality and visual intensity.
In 2015, the painting was sold for a staggering $210 million, placing it among the artist’s most valuable works. Its distinctive palette has been faithfully reproduced on the silver coin, while the gold-plated frame enhances the design’s elegant and prestigious character.
