The Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja) is one of the largest and most powerful birds of prey found in the tropical rainforests of the Americas. Its imposing silhouette is distinguished by a robust head, a strong curved beak and a characteristic feathered crest that it can raise when alert. It has extraordinarily thick legs and enormous talons, specially adapted for capturing prey among the trees. Females are considerably larger than males and can reach impressive dimensions.

Its natural plumage combines mainly grey, white and black tones, giving the bird an elegant yet formidable appearance. The Harpy Eagle inhabits primarily the humid tropical rainforests of Central and South America, where it depends on vast areas of well-preserved forest. It prefers dense vegetation with very tall trees, which it uses both for resting and for building its enormous nests.

From the forest canopy, it observes and locates its prey before striking with tremendous power and precision. Its diet consists mainly of arboreal mammals such as sloths and monkeys, as well as other birds and small vertebrates. As one of the great predators of the tropical canopy, the Harpy Eagle embodies the strength, majesty and untamed nature of some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet.
