The flamingo is an unmistakable aquatic bird, distinguished by its elegant silhouette, long legs and characteristic curved neck. Its plumage ranges from pale pink to intense reddish tones, depending on the species and its diet. It has a specialised downward-curving beak, which it uses to filter small organisms from the water.

It inhabits mainly shallow lagoons, wetlands, salt flats and alkaline or brackish lakes across different regions of Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas. Flamingos often form large colonies that can number thousands of individuals. Their diet consists of small crustaceans, algae, molluscs and other aquatic microorganisms.

The carotenoid pigments present in these foods are responsible for the pink colour of their feathers. To feed, the flamingo lowers its head into the water and filters food through specialised structures in its beak. Its long legs allow it to move comfortably through shallow waters while searching for food. The combination of its striking colour, social behaviour and the vast aquatic landscapes it inhabits makes the flamingo one of the most recognisable and spectacular birds in the world.
