In 1868, an experimental series of stamps with the so-called grill pattern—an embossed grid of cuts designed to prevent reuse—was created in the United States.

The variant with horizontal cuts, known as the Z-Grill, has survived in only two examples.

One is held in the collection of the New York Public Library, and the other was sold at auction in 2024 for a record 4.3 million dollars.

The coin faithfully depicts the appearance of this stamp, highlighting its unique pattern and its exceptional place in the history of philately.
