Mars is the second coin in the series of oxidised twoounce coins "Roman Gods".

Bellona is the Roman goddess of war, probably of Sabine origin, wife or sister of Mars.

In her temple on the Field of Mars, messages from countries unfriendly to Rome and warlords seeking triumph were received. The declaration of war to countries not bordering with Rome took place in front of the temple, next to the column called "war column". It was also there that the Senate received chieftains returning from war expeditions.

She was depicted wearing a helmet and with a spear in her hand, driving the chariot of Mars. The priests of Bellona were characterised by dark clothing and a black fleece on their heads, while their goddess was depicted as a figure with repulsive features, similar to the traditional depiction of fury.

The reverse of the coin depicts a female warrior riding a chariot drawn by four horses. She is shown in a dynamic manner, and her posture indicates an attack.

The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II.
