Chernobyl - coin proceeds support Ukraine

The Chernobyl coin premiered at the beginning of this year. When Russia attacked Ukraine, we decided to support the Ukrainian people by donating the proceeds from the sale of the coin to humanitarian organisations.

Support of Ukraine

On 24 February 2022, modern history changed. Future generations will name this historical period, but we are already witnessing the changes taking place in the world. At a time when the whole world was struggling with the effects of a coronavirus pandemic, Russia launched an armed invasion of Ukraine. Millions of people had to flee their homeland, many losing their loved ones, their homes, all their possessions. The scale of this crime is constantly growing, as the war between Ukraine and Russia continues. Thousands of refugees can count only on the support of the population in other countries.

As the Mint of Gdansk we want to support organizations that provide humanitarian aid to all Ukrainians in need. We donated the "Chernobyl" coin for auctioning, all proceeds from which were donated to the charity. Additionally, since the beginning of the invasion, we have donated PLN 400 from the sale of each "Chernobyl" coin. We hope that in this way we can contribute to supporting those who most need a helping hand now.

Chernobyl coin

First coin of the series "Human Tragedies". The series depicts disasters that have shaken humanity.

The first coin depicts the Chernobyl catastrophe, which is described as the greatest disaster in the history of nuclear power and one of the greatest industrial disasters of the 20th century.

The reverse of the coin depicts the mask of a liquidator, in which the scene of the cleaning of the area after the explosion is reflected. The high relief shows all the details. In addition to the exceptionally interesting design, the coin impresses with its addition. Selected parts of the coin glow in the dark! This alludes to people's ideas about the appearance of radioactive substances. At the bottom is the date of the reactor accident.

The obverse of the coin features the coat of arms of Niue, information on the denomination, the silver sample and the year of issue. In the background there is a characteristic ferris wheel - a symbol of the hurriedly abandoned Pripyat. The coin is packed in an elegant wooden box, together with a certificate of authenticity. The mintage is limited to 500 pieces only
