The Battle of Salamis - the first coin in the new series

We present the first coin from the latest series "Sea Battles"

The ideas for collector coins are endless. We can be inspired by world history, pop culture, geology, natural phenomena, etc. This time we decided to create a series of coins that will depict the most famous sea battles that took place in the history of humanity. The series opens, of course, with antiquity.

1. The Battle of Salamis - history

This is the most famous battle of the ancient world. It took place on 28 September 480 BC in the Saronic Gulf. Between Salamis and the coast of Attica, Greek and Persian troops met. Xerxes, the Persian ruler, was so sure of his victory that he had his throne built on the coast of Attica to watch his victory. But this did not happen. The battle was won by the Greek army, led by Temistocles. The victory of the small Greek fleet over the Persian fleet, which had a considerable advantage, decided the future of the war. This result was achieved for several reasons: Firstly, the Greek troops took more favourable positions to fight than the Persian troops. Secondly, the Greeks simply...were able to swim. The warriors who fell into the water mostly saved themselves back to the shore of Salamis. The Persians did not have this ability - a large part of them died by drowning. The victory of the Greeks was also influenced by their ships, and more specifically their lightweight construction, which made them agile and fast. The Persians had heavy ships. In addition, the escaping Persian ships were battering each other. This battle is considered to be one of those that changed the history. It was of great strategic importance, which turned out to be a turning point in the war. The Persian troops did not lose many of their ships, but they had to retreat, cutting off supplies from onshore troops.

2. Battle of Salamis - coin

This coin was struck from fine silver. It weighs 2 troy ounces (62.2 g) and has a diameter of 45 mm. The reverse of the coin is decorated with a high relief with a beautiful engraving depicting Greek troops battering the Persian fleet. The whole is surrounded by a typical Greek design. At the top of the coin there is an insert made of lapacho wood. It is the toughest species of exotic tree. On the insert there is an image of a dolphin - not without reason. For the ancient Greeks, dolphins were a symbol of providence, helping ships to overcome waves. People considered them as envoys of the gods.
On the obverse, on the other hand, a map of the Greek region is engraved, showing the movement of Greek and Persian troops during the battle. The coin can be purchased [ under this link ].
