The kangaroo appears, alongside the Emu, in the state coat of arms of Australia and is the national symbol. It can survive for weeks without water, spends its childhood in a bag, moves around by jumping and is one of the largest mammals on Earth.
The name kangaroo, from Kangaroo, was given by English settlers and comes from the Aboriginal word 'gungurru'.

The reverse shows an adult jumping kangaroo. A windmill is shown in the background. The coin bears the inscription "KANGAROO" as well as information on the weight, year of issue and bullion proof. The reverse was designed by Wade Robinson.
