Over the years, animals have become extinct on Earth for various reasons. Sometimes climate change was to blame, other times human intervention. According to scientists, about 150 animal species become extinct every day. The new series of coins of the Mint of Lithuania "Mysteriously Extinct Animals" invites everyone to admire and learn about several of them.

Kioea is a species of extinct Hawaiian bird that became extinct around 1859. Kioea numbers were declining even before the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands by Europeans. It is likely that even the native Hawaiians were not well acquainted with this species of bird.

Only four stuffed specimens of this species are currently in museum collections.

The exact cause of the black kioea's extinction is unknown, but the main threats to the bird were deforestation of its natural habitat, introduced predators and avian malaria.
