The coin was struck in 14.6 g sterling silver. The centre of the coin was decorated with a very rare metal - tantalum.

The obverse depicts a composition that symbolizes the unity of man and the universe, the bond between the past and the present. On the reverse there is an image of the spaceship "Vostok", an image of the Moon and the year "1961", which marks the year of the first manned flight into space.
