The coin was struck in 28 g silver. The reverse shows John II of Portugal.

John II of Portugal (port. João II) was king of Portugal from 1481 to 1495. He was called the Prince of the Perfect.

He ascended the throne in August 1481, and made efforts to oppose the excessive power of the aristocracy - his methods are evidenced, for example, by the execution of the Duke of Bragança (1483) for sympathising with Castile, or the murder of the young Duke of Viseu with his own hands for conspiracy.

Supporting geographical discoveries, he sent overland expeditions to India and Ethiopia in search of the legendary Christian kingdom of Prince John, and also sent a ship beyond the North Cape. John II refused to finance an expedition proposed by Christopher Columbus to India across the Atlantic Ocean as a result of a negative opinion from a maritime commission. He organised his own expeditions in search of an eastern sea route to India. During his reign Diogo Cão reached the mouth of the Congo River (1484) and Bartolomeu Dias sailed around the Cape of Good Hope (1488).
