Witold Pilecki was an extraordinary figure. A patriot, a hero and an excellent conspirator. After the outbreak of World War II, he became fully engaged in the organisation of the Polish Underground State. When the need came for somebody from the strict leadership to get into the German concentration camp, Witold Pilecki complied with the given order. In Auschwitz, he capably organized and led the conspiration – Związek Organizacji Wojskowej (Military Organization Union). Pilecki stayed in the camp from September 1940 to April 1943, when he escaped with his two co-prisoners. He was an author of the shocking Pilecki’s Report – a report describing genocide which he had witnessed in the concentration camp.
After the war, he was arrested as one of the “cursed out” by the communists. After the tortures he experienced during the investigation (while his last meeting with his wife, he confessed to her that “Oświęcim was a fribble”) and an absurd trial, Witold Pilecki died as a result of a shot in the back of his head.
