The World War II was a tragic period in the history of the Roma and Sinti, when the German Nazis and their allies committed crimes of genocide against them, as well as against the Jews. It is assumed that at that time around 500 000 people were murdered in Europe, which is probably around 50% of their pre-war population.

The coin commemorates the tragic events of the night of 2 to 3 August 1944. On the reverse side of the coin there is an image of Marianna Paczkowska, a survivor of the extermination, made according to the preserved photograph. In March 1944, she and her family were deported to the Auschwitz II-Birkenau concentration camp (registered as Paczkowski Marie, camp number 10042).
